Crescent City – after the rain – oh…..and before the next rain

Two hours – that is what we were granted of sunshine prior to the rains resuming – however we made the most of it.  The harbor at Crescent City is fascinating – we wandered through it on our way out to a pier where we could hear sea lions. There was a vast array of old, beat up boats.  Some were up for sale, others appeared to be completely abandoned an up on supports waiting for the wind and weather to return them to dust (or rot)

Some of the boats in the harbor were active fishing vessels and in various states of repair or disrepair.

Continuing on we found perhaps the last working payphone in the continental United States – funny to even see these any more – I remember them from my childhood.  I wonder where Superman changes now?  Please advise if you know the answer.

From the phone booth we continued and finally found the sea lions – big, undefined creatures piled one upon another – I never realized that they might possibly be the prototype for Gumby – they seem to have no bones in their bodies, moving this way and that with complete ease.  They were given a floating dock in the middle of the harbor to occupy – however, best laid plans of men, they much preferred an occupied dock, and piled on it to the point where it was barely above water.  Funny , these sea lions.

We prefer THIS dock!

After a bite of dinner at a restaurant with a wonderful view of the sea lions and harbor, including a quick view of people getting WAY too close to aforementioned sea lions we started back to Moby.

No, honey, they aren’t LIONS…they are sea lions. Real friendly.

On the way we both commented on the rough shape of the marina:

Apparently as a result of the earthquake in Japan the Harbor at Crescent City was almost completely destroyed in the resulting tsunami.  Although not reaching the shore until 8 hours later it destroyed the harbor, sinking somewhere in the neighbor hood of 16 boats and completely throwing the fishing fleet and processing plants out of work.  They are in the process of rebuilding the harbor and will be complete in 2014.

Before tsunami

After tsunami

I guess we didn’t do so bad for only having two hours, did we.
